Quotes from Pain Hustlers film on Netflix

6

Liza: Why do you want to sell pharmaceuticals?
Ellen: When the child support is late, my kid doesn’t eat.
Nicole: So, I can stop lying to my kids about what I do for a living.

7

Liza: $4,500? Is that even legal?
Pete: 67 in a 65.

8

Liza: You own your territory; you own a doctor.

9

Liza: You can hire the sex toy if I can hire my mom.
Pete: You’ll regret it.
Liza: So will you.

10

Liza: We wrote this statement where I was going to say how naive I was coming into this. That how when I told my bosses. That things didn’t seem right. They said we’re playing by the rules, and that I believed them, and I went along with it. I was supposed to say I didn’t go to pharmacy school. It wasn’t me writing the prescriptions, it wasn’t my fault. But that would be a lie. I helped build this thing. And I knew it was wrong. The truth is, I wanted the money. I wanted the respect. And I wanted it so badly, I stopped caring how I got it. And now people’s lives have been destroyed. Am I sorry? Yes. But I did what I did.

Cast: Emily Blunt, Chris Evans, Catherine O’Hara, and Andy Garcia.

Quotes from Pain Hustlers movie

11

Interviewer: Really? You still believe that?
Pete: You sell what’s in your bag.

12
Liza: We lived or died by the clinic gatekeepers, and there’s nothing a 50-year-old desk nurse hates more than a young hot thing half her age pulling twice her salary.
13
Liza: Greasing doctors is an art, not a science. Every drug company’s trying to put money in their hands. You can’t just throw checks at them. They all think you’re wearing a wire.
14

Liza: Money’s dignity. Not having to beg for a break. Can’t tell you what it meant to finally be one of those people you can’t shame, shake down, or f**k over.

15

Doctor: I’m just not quite sure…
Nicole: That you can trust me? Doctor, I have two mortgages, three kids, one with special needs. If you join our speaker’s bureau, you would be my partner and my lifeline. I will walk through fire to protect you.

16

Dr. Neel: Do you have ugly toes? Get a pedicure! You have ugly feet? Wear socks! Hey! Get your shoes off!

17

Liza: Where are the doctors?
Pete: Half of them couldn’t make it, and the rest are no-shows.

18

Pete: Speaker programs are pharma’s dirty little secret, minus the little and secret. What’s a speaker program? It’s where you fly prescribers to Hawaii, Pebble Beach, and if you’re doing it by the book, you get some a**hole to speed read a slide deck so everyone can get back to hitting on drug reps and getting drunk. And then they fly home and they write your drug. It’s a legal grift, and everybody was doing it. And we would have too.

19

Pete: That is a big f**king deal. That’s my nine million-dollar man, and Liza got him pregnant. Think he’s pregnant?
Liza: I think he’s pretty pregnant.

20

Pete: Doesn’t matter. Praxiom owns him.
Liza: Why? Because she got macaroons?
Pete: Because she reminds him of a girl he used to je*k off to in high school, except now he holds the cards.

21

Mother: Oh, you’re gonna get through this. Yes. Yes, you will. It’s who you are.

22

Liza: If you’re in this s**thole, you’re not finance. I’d say insurance, except your Ferragamos are too nice. So, I’m guessing cars. Or you’re a drug rep.
Pete: She had a gift for reading people. She can make you feel very seen and understood in this very powerful way, and then 45 minutes later, you’re out two grand.

23

Pete: Brent Larkin, VP of marketing, a backstabbing snake hired for his bionic ability to make you wanna buy the opposite of whatever he was selling.

Plot Pain Hustlers (2023) movie

Liza Drake is a single mother after a divorce in Florida. She works as an exotic dancer while raising her teenage daughter Phoebe. One day, Liza meets Pete Brenner at the club where she works. Surprisingly, Pete offers her a job. Later, Liza’s daughter has been suspended for starting a fire near the school. However, an argument about money with her sister leads to Liza being kicked out of her sister’s garage. As a result, they move into a motel.

Pete reviews Liza’s resume and enhances her qualifications, stating she holds a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry. He then introduces her to the company’s founder, Doctor Jack Neel, who promptly hires her despite the company not hiring. Pete grants her a five-day probation period to convince a prominent physician to prescribe their leading drug, Lonafen.

Liza couldn’t secure any prescriptions from potential clients in under five days. She convinced Dr. Lydell to prescribe Lonafen instead and invited him to speak at their program. The event initially failed, but Liza turned it into a successful speakers program. Eventually, Dr. Lydell signed on to prescribe Lonafen after being offered financial incentives by Pete. Zanna recruits new sales representatives and quickly captures 86% of the market share in the northeast. Meanwhile, Phoebe had a seizure and was diagnosed with CAVM.

Larkin tries to expose Liza’s fraudulent resume. As a result, he is fired. Neel becomes impatient with sales flattening out and pressures Liza and the sales team to market the drug off-label for all types of pain. He also instructs Liza to fire her mother, Jackie. Phoebe has another seizure and needs surgery to remove an arterial mass in her brain. Liza tries to offer her Zanna stock options as collateral for a loan, but the bank denies her. After Lydell’s arrest, Liza turns to Neel for financial help, but he encourages her to use the crisis as inspiration for a new idea.

After Camille’s husband Sidney dies from an overdose of Lonafen, Liza decides to testify to the U.S. Attorney’s office investigating Zanna. She admits to assisting in building Zanna’s speaker program and ensuring their bribery program complied with regulations. When questioned about others involved, she confirms Eric Paley, Pete Brenner, and Jack Neel. However, they request further evidence connecting Neel to the illegal activities.

Liza tries to steal a printout from Pete’s jacket during the event, but he catches her in the parking lot. He finds the printout in her purse. Neel offers to take care of Pete’s family. The FBI arrests Eric Paley, but the boss remains untouchable and even appears on magazine covers. Liza discovers that her mother had an affair with Neel and used his email to request a commission increase. He wanted her fired for this. Jackie saved the emails, which served as evidence of Neel’s involvement in illegal activities at Zanna.

Experts in the U.S. Attorney’s depositions disclosed that Lonafen is essentially fentanyl, leading to addiction and fatal overdoses in non-terminal patients who were prescribed the drug. As a result, Lydell, Paley, Brenner, and Neel were fined and imprisoned. Despite a sincere apology in court and the U.S. Attorney’s suggestion that Liza is not imprisoned to avoid discouraging future whistleblowers, the judge sentenced her to 16 months in prison, citing her greed as the cause of loss of life. Liza was released early after 15 months.
